In this post I want to follow on from my previous post Do You Have An Effective Article Marketing Strategy – Or Not! because I have had a lot of queries and comments both on my blog and on a couple of forums I posted too and it seems that when folks think about article marketing all they can see are backlinks to their sites.

Well I just need to reiterate that there is a lot more to article marketing than just getting backlinks, and I’ll tell you my biggest article marketing mistake that probably cost me thousands of dollars. But more on that later.

Have you looked at article marketing with the intention of promoting your blog or website. And have you decided to give it a miss because you heard bad things about Google and article directories, if so you may be making a big mistake.

First let’s have a little history lesson then I’ll tell you about my big article marketing mistake! Are you sitting comfortably – only joking!

Just after I got online back in 2006, that seems like a long time ago now, I discovered the internet marketing strategy of writing articles to attract visitors to my site. That is what it was all about in those days, getting people to actually read your articles and have them click the link to your site.

A simple article marketing strategy that worked, oh, and you got some pretty decent backlinks to your site as well. Then during the next six years a new breed of article marketer emerged, and they could not care less about whether anyone read their article or not, all they wanted was the backlinks back to their websites.

They used automation to submit them to thousands of article marketing directories, most of these brand new and built to accomodate automation. They also spun their articles so much that each of these thousands of copies were unique content. That’s a joke, unique rubbish would be more accurate.

But it worked, and as folks got thousands of backlinks they saw their sites rise in the search engine results and more people clambered on board this backlink train to get some of the action. The sad result of all this massive backlinking is that folk now associate article marketing with backlinking only, and so they say it is no longer an effective  marketing strategy.

But the thing is nothing has really changed with article marketing at all when you compare it with what I learned back in 2006. Article marketing is still a highly effective way to get targeted visitors to your website or blog, period. Providing of course that you write a half decent article that addresses the needs or problems of the people reading it. OK the backlinks are not quite as valuable as they used to be, but the visitor count has not altered and that is what really matters here.

So what was my biggest article marketing mistake? Well I’ll tell you and it’s a classic. I stopped doing it! I went and followed another marketing strategy that seemed easier, of course I should know nothing is easier. So my advice today would be to anyone who takes up article marketing is never stop and over time you will build up a massive internet presence that will drive traffic to your site every single day. The beauty of this strategy is that as you get  successful you can easily outsource everything.

Is An Article Marketing Strategy Still Relevant In Today’s World?

Just a year ago, no one doubted that having an article marketing strategy was essential for helping your website achieve higher search engine rankings. Then Google slapped quite a few of the article directories and many folk, who didn’t know any better, suddenly declared article marketing was dead. All I have to say to this is ‘balderdash’, cos  I’m being polite today!

It still works but not just like it did before, unless of course you were one of the few who cared about your content and submitted decent articles to decent directories and authority sites.

If you spent your time spinning articles that end up unreadable, and using submission tools to ‘blast’ your articles to thousands of worthless sites, then this will not be working quite as well for you now. Notice I didn’t say it wouldn’t work, it just won’t work anyway near as well as it did before.

So is article marketing and having an article marketing strategy still a viable option for web masters wanting more traffic to their sites?

Well to be honest that will depend on what your overall marketing strategy is! If you are planning on implement SEO, search engine optimization, as your primary marketing strategy, then, you most certainly do need to have your article marketing strategy in place.

And the reason you must do this is because you need to have plenty of links pointing to your main site, or money site, then you need to apply SEO techniques to get back links to those links. But one thing to bear in mind is what I said above, if all your back links are from crappy sites to start with they will still be of little value when you back link those same sites!

This is why we really must do our best to have decent content on decent sites that will give us the quality back links we must have to win the battle of the search engines.

I have to be honest I did try one of the favorite mass article submitters and even had some spun content to send out but it wasn’t successful. After one week of daily automatic submission to about 300 sites daily,  I checked my links and only 41 links where found. It sounds good submitting to what could have been 1500 site in a week but to end up with only 41 actual submissions certainly wasn’t worth the effort, especially to sites that would never see a human visitor.

Does That Mean We Can’t Automate?

Not at all, I am all in favor of automation and use the services of  Submit Your Articles to submit my articles to quality sites and blogs. They are one of the few submitters that Ezine Articles actually allows submissions from, and that is because all their submitted content is manually approved by them first.

By all means spin your content before distributing it but there is no quick way to do this. There is not a single article spinner out there that will spin and produce readable articles at the press of a button. Use them by all means but you must manually spin your article yourself to ensure to quality of your content.

Some folk are going to disagree with what I’ve said here, and I don’t really care, but this is how I use my article marketing strategy, and it does seem to be working as part of my overall SEO marketing plan.

How to get prospects to part with their hard-earned cash!

Well the first thing to do is to stop selling, that’s right you heard, stop selling! Nobody likes to be sold to, so why spend your time doing it! If your product is any good at all, then it will solve a problem for someone. So all you have to do is get targeted traffic, that is folk looking for answers, to your company website and show them the presentation. That’s it job done, no hard sell, no hassle!

After your prospects have watched the presentation they will be interested or not, simple as that. Some will join but most won’t and the ones that don’t will need following up with because maybe they are a little unsure, or maybe the time is not quite right and maybe in a month or two they might be ready to join you.

Even now when we are following up it is still best to keep away from the hard sell, we don’t want folk to join us just because we are good at selling! We want folk to join us because they like what they see, and as well as making some money the product is genuinely useful to them. This way they will stay with you longer and have a lot more interest in promoting our opportunity, and this is exactly what we want.

We don’t want loads of folk in our business who have been sold to, and are doing nothing to promote it, better to have just half a dozen who are actively bringing in their own new members. This is when we build a successful business and will lead to our network marketing success.

Well it’s official spring is finally here, I say finally because it seems to have been a long , cold and wet winter here in Crete even though we get off lightly compared to our neighbours a little further north in south east Europe.

It’s just that all the houses her on our island are geared up for sunshine so everything just seems so cold and damp during the winter. We do get some great days in amongst though as you can see from my post here:

Anyway time to move on, it’s spring, the birds are singing and we should all be feeling that burst of spring energy that will drive us forward into the rest of the year.

Some cool things that happened this week:

  weeks time. – So proud of you my love!

• Some of my content is now ranking on the first page of Google for targeted keywords. – Love it when that happens too.
• Finally! I got my whole content marketing process, the actual steps I take with each piece of content I write, down on a spreadsheet. – This helps me no end to keep track of exactly where I am in the process, and it is a process that works! – Nothing gets missed and nothing gets duplicated.

So that’s it for today folks, it’s Saturday morning here in Crete and I am off to do  some work on a house just down the road, a renovation job that got a little behind with the bad weather we have been having here in Crete. – Did I tell you I love my house renovating business as well!

2. For the purpose of getting back-links to our site for SEO purposes so we rise in the search engine rankings.

Now first off let me say that all article marketing will get us back-links to our sites but not all internet article marketing will get people to read our content. So we have some article directories that have active readers looking our content and other directories that hardly ever get visitors – both however give us  back-links to our site.

The reason I use Submit Your Article is because they submit a higher quality article to most of the top article directories, like Ezine Articles and Go Articles, as and also to their own blog publishing network, and because of their unique article leverage system all articles are unique.
